Scores Third-Tier $10,000 Powerball Prize
A happy, but laid-back couple entered Lottery Headquarters today to claim a major Powerball prize. Ali Akbas plays Mega Millions and Powerball faithfully every week. This past week was no exception, but the outcome was very different. He and his wife, Aynur, matched four white balls and the Powerball to win $10,000 in the multi-state jackpot game.
The mechanic/electrician said he waits until both Mega Millions and Powerball are drawn before he checks his tickets. So, last night he pulled out all of his tickets from Friday and Saturday nights’ drawings and began the process of checking them. When he saw he had a winning ticket, it took awhile for it to sink in. “I think I checked those tickets about ten times,” said Ali. “I wanted to make sure I wasn’t mixing up the two games.” He then shared the news with his wife who remained skeptical about the win until the prize was actually claimed.
The happy twosome, who has a 9-year-old daughter, plans to use the winnings to pay bills. The winning ticket was purchased at Giant, located at 9200 Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City.

Mega Millions at $140 million; Powerball at $78 million; and Multi-Match at $2.6 million
Maryland Lottery jackpot games are brewing excitement throughout the state this weekend. Tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot is $140 million, tomorrow’s Powerball jackpot is $87 million and Monday’s Multi-Match jackpot has reached $2.6 million.
“Three big jackpots in four days create a certain buzz in the air for lottery players,” explained Lottery Communications Director Carole Everett. We see that excitement in a very tangible way; our agents report a significant increase in sales.”
While the odds are long for winning the top prize on multi-state jackpot games, many players regularly win second and third-tier prizes. This year, for example, twenty one Marylanders won Mega Millions’ $250,000 second-tier prize and seven have won Powerball’s $200,000 second-tier prize. Players can now maximize payouts on non-jackpot winnings by utilizing Powerball’s PowerPlay and the new Megaplier option on Mega Millions.
The Mega Millions drawing can be seen tonight on WBAL-TV, Channel 11. Also on Channel 11 is tomorrow’s Powerball drawing and Monday’s Multi-Match drawing. All drawings take place at 11:22 pm.
Greg Smith of Cumberland now has 10,004 reasons to spend more time with his family; a leisurely trip from his home in Cumberland to visit his brother in Frederick resulted in a third-tier Powerball win.
Smith, who works in commercial insurance, hadn’t had the chance to visit his brother in Frederick since he moved there and decided to make the trip on Wednesday, October 6th. An avid Powerball player, he realized only after arriving in Frederick that he hadn’t bought his ticket for that evening’s drawing. When he stopped for gas, Smith decided to buy his tickets right then and there – and purchased tickets for the next four drawings. This was a break in his normal routine as he usually buys his tickets in Cumberland and has since Powerball came to Maryland this past January.
As usual, Smith checked his numbers online and is still in disbelief that he won. “My mother-in-law won $15,000 from a scratch-off in West Virginia and that was the only big Lottery win our family has ever had,” he said with a huge grin. “The next win is going to be the big one.”
Smith, who is married with three children, hasn’t figured out how he’s going to spend the money yet. He just wanted to “see the check in person” before making any plans.
The winning ticket was purchased at Riverside Market Place at 1991 Monocacy Boulevard in Frederick.
The 46-year-old salesman stopped to buy his weekly Powerball ticket on Friday. After the purchase, he quickly glanced at his numbers and noticed two 11’s on one line. One was one of the five white balls, the other was the Powerball. Later that night, he happened to look at the clock and, lo and behold, it read 11:11 pm. So, perhaps he shouldn’t have been surprised when his Powerball ticket with those 11’s yielded a $10,000 win. “I kept seeing those numbers,” said the father-of-two. “I thought it might mean something.”
The lucky Lottery fan was in good spirits over the weekend. He thought about the poodle which he had recently rescued and how it was getting strong and gaining weight. He also thought about that Lottery ticket and those 11’s. But, it wasn’t until Monday morning that he finally checked his ticket and discovered that he was $10,000 richer.
“I checked the numbers on mdlottery.com,” said the winner. “I saw the matching numbers and started to shout quietly in my office.” He then called his wife with the good news. “She told me to stop teasing,” he said. After he was finally able to convince her that he was telling the truth, he told a couple co-workers about his windfall – one of whom very recently had his own $10,000 Lottery scratch-off win. The happy Perry Hall resident intends to use his winnings to buy a dining room set for his wife and pay bills. The winning ticket was purchased at Fairground Plaza Liquors, located at 41 W. Aylesbury Rd. in Lutherville.
