Wins $250,000 Playing Mega Millions
When an Odenton man bought $5 worth of Mega Millions quick pick tickets last week, luck was not supposed to be on his side. It was Friday the 13th, the day that many people superstitiously believe is one of the unluckiest days of the year. Yet, he purchased his tickets and took home the game’s $250,000 second-tier prize.
The lucky man left work early that day and decided to stop into the store to buy tickets for the Mega Millions drawing later that evening. After getting the tickets, he went home and returned to the store the next morning to see if any were winners. “The automated ticket checker machine was broke, so I asked the cashier to check my tickets,” said the man. “The cashier ran them and said, ‘Oh. You have a big one.’ It was so surreal.” When he returned home, he kept rechecking his numbers all weekend to make certain he was a winner before coming to Lottery headquarters to claim his prize.
The lucky winner is a retired U.S. Air Force veteran who currently works as a civilian in management for the federal government. He and his wife of 36 years have three adult children and two grandchildren. He usually plays Mega Millions and scratch-off tickets and the largest he has ever won before last Friday was $500 on a scratch off. He plans to use his winnings to pay off credit card debts and to save the rest for retirement.
The winning ticket was purchased at Odenton Liquors, located at 1115 Annapolis Road in Odenton.
